Collect even more socks by sending home Sock Sally as an ambassador for Socktoberfest.
This project meets California Department of Education Standards:
Second Grade Writing Standard 2.2, Write a friendly letter complete
with the date, salutation, body, closing, and signature.
Third Grade Writing Standard 2.3, Write personal and formal letters.
Step 1: Have your students bring in old, clean socks to make their very own Sock Sally puppets.
Allow students to be creative. Some may wish to make a Sock Sam or a Sock Sea Monster, it all works.
Don't worry if you do not have buttons and yarn, construction paper and white glue work great for decorating a
puppet.
Step 2: Work with students to draft a letter that Sock Sally can take with her on her journey. The letter will need to
explain that:
 | | Sock Sally is on a quest to collect donations of new socks during the month of Socktober for the Salvation Army.
|
 | | Socks can either be brought into the school by a student or donations can be made online at Sock Sally's website:
|
http://socksally.theclassroom.org.
 | | The reader should pass Sock Sally and the letter on to someone else to continue Sock Sally's journey.
|
 | | Socktober ends this year on October 22, 2010.
|
Step 3: Have each student bring home the Sock Sally puppet they created to begin her journey collecting sock donations for
the Salvation Army.
Step 4: Give students opportunities to share updates on their Sock Sally's journey during the month of Socktober. | |
